Ted The Bear

I don’t know the full story of how Ted wound up living at the new North American Bear Center in Ely, Minnesota but it sounds like Lynn Rogers (the man who runs the bear center) rescued him from an unpleasant situation of some sort. Ted is only now — as a very large adult — learning how to walk in the forest and forage for food.

As many of you already know, Mark and I spent a week with Lynn Rogers two years ago as participants in one of his black bear study courses. It was a wonderful experience and we met several very nice bears. (Check out the pictures in my photo gallery. Just click on “gallery” up above.)

Anyway, check out this great video of Ted the bear in his new home at the North American Bear Center. Very cool.

  1. Ted Bear
Hi Rebecca, We did the Wildlife Black bear course in 2005 together. I know work the center and I personally with Donna Phelan take care of Ted and Honey bear. They both came to us from a good home. They were raised by Cindy and her husband Tim from cub size. They were treated as family. It is due to an insurance problem that Cindy sought out a good home for the bears. a good friend heard about the bears and since he was creating the enclosure that the bears now reside in thought the bears would be a great asset to the center. They are. We never use the word rescue when referring to our bears, They came from a loving family who took excellent care of them. Yes, we did put them on a low sugar diet but they eat manay of the same foods as they were accustomed to such as, lettuce, nuts, carrots, sunflower seeds, blueberry, apples, romaine lettuce, grapes, dates, and mango.
We encourage to come visit us and see for yourself these magnificant bears. Ted is 10 yrs. old and Honey is 11. We also have a cub that came to us in July. His name is Lucky and he is now friends with Ted. All the bears have individual dens and although they are getting ready for hibernation and are moving slowly they are still coming to the front of the enclosure to eat. Folks visiting love our bears and know that they were given to us by a very loving family that wanted the best for the bears,
    thank-you for listening.
If you need more info on the bears please contact me or Lynn, Donna or Sue.
