And It’s…..Abscess Time!
Filed under HealthJul 7It just kinda figured, didn’t it?
I have been doing gradually better the last few days. The pain control docs got me on a good new drug regimen, time-release morphine twice a day with an IV bolus of Dilaudid as needed. I’ve also been moved up to a regular diet. (Yay!) So I have more options on what to eat. They have pizza, so I think I’m going to try that for lunch this afternoon.
With the better pain control, I’ve been back to walking around the ward more and my bowel function seems to be normalizing. Also, they have taken me OFF the TNP (IV nutrition) and removed my PICC line day-before yesterday. This was very welcome, as the TNP was keeping me awake all night from having to pee every 30 or 45 minutes while receiving it.
So… all was going well when yesterday (thank goodness, while the nurse was in the room) there was a strange hissing sound and a terrible stench and, whoah! Hello! A red spot below my navel kind of opened up and began disgorging all sorts of vile goo. I know.. way too much information. Sorry!
I had been wondering why I was having more pain in that area. Now we know.
They’ve been packing it and bandaging it and the oozing has slowed down significantly. It appears to be relatively minor, all things considered, but….man-oh-man. It smells really bad.
Okay. I’ll try to spare you such gross details in the future.
I am still making progress overall and they’re talking about sending me home maybe on Tuesday. That will be wonderful!

Eww. I keep thinking of that scene in “Alien” where the baby alien kind pops out of…well, you know the one. On the other hand, gross as it is, this is pretty easily treated. And maybe home on Tuesday?? That would be terrific!

Bleh, abscesses are no good! It’s so great that your bowel function is finally normalizing though – it must be a relief to finally be able to eat food.

Wow, shouldn’t they have been checking your incision to avoid that kind of thing?!

Pizza, that should be a welcome sight. Glad to hear the bowels are doing better!

Cindy, they saw that it was getting inflamed in that area and said that with something like this, they just have to wait and see what’s going to develop. They tell me (and I believe it to be true) that abscesses like this are pretty common with major abdominal surgery.

Great to hear of all the advancements! And sorry to hear about the abcess. Never a good thing, but I saw
many through the years and most resolve with proper treatment…you’re probably back on antibiotics. So after the pizza, have a yoghurt! Sending good vibes and looking forward to you’re coming home.
